That said, there are plenty of shops in Beijing who can help you on your interior design journey, from antiques to contemporary classics to unique, handcrafted pieces.

FNJI

Located near the Confucius Temple on quiet Guozijian Jie, FNJI (pronounced 'fanji') is stocked with sleek high-end furniture from Chinese and Japanese designers. With all that high design comes a high price tag, but there is a selection of handmade home décor and stationery available at a more accessible price point. If you’re not in the market for highend furniture, the expertly renovated courtyard is still worth a trip. Instead stop in the shop’s sunny café where you can simply take in the view over a latté.

This Gulou boutique is the place to head if you like your homewares to come with a healthy dollop of character. Carefully selected vintage Chinese products sit alongside sustainable soaps and accessories.

Muji

Though on first glance it may look like a scaled-down Ikea, Muji is much more than that. Clean, simple, minimalist and coolly Japanese, everything in this lifestyle store is several notches better quality than the Swedish behemoth, with an emphasis on functionality above all else. It also sells almost anything you can think of – from clothes and shoes to laptop bags, clocks, travel socks, wallets and incense burners.

Wangjing

Ikea

It's cheap, it's functional, it's flatpacked and many of the homewares look more high-end than their affordable price point would suggest. All of the familiar homogenised furniture and interior accessories you've either come to love or loathe can be found in abundance at Beijing's flagship Ikea megastore. The sightseers and sofa surfers make things rather crowded at peak hours.
